Dicentra
formosa 'Western Bleeding Heart' |
HOME |
This lovely little, fernlike plant makes a wonderful ground cover for spring bulbs and rhizomes, such as Iris. Growing to about 8"tall, the light green, lacy foliage rises up quickly from it's rhizome late February or early March. As soon as the foliage fills out, a little stalk with many delightful pink, heart or bell shaped flowers dangle down. Hummingbirds look forward to this desert in March and April. As summer creeps on, the foliage will wither and die back unless watered. If so, the plant will stay green up until fall. Permit the little rhizomes to sleep through winter, so that they may return to brighten your days in March and April. Excellent foil with native iris or Pacific Coast Hybrid iris. |
