One of the most delighful of the early blooming natives, Ribes sanguineum has beautiful, delicate hanging panicles of light pink to pinkish-red inflorescens February-March that have a slight, pleasant fragrance.  Ribes sang can grow quickly up to 8-10' tall and about 4' wide.  It needes a well drained soil and no summer water after it's established, usually within two years.  Plant in part sun, with early morning sun exposure for best results.  Afternoon sun will cause the flowers to fade quicker.  All Ribes loose their leaves in the summer as a response to the long dry period.

This plant makes an excellent specimen plant by itself, as a background plant or even as a deciduous screen plant.  Ribes produces berries in the summer that attract birds and the flowers are candy to the hummingbirds.  This plant occurs all over Calif from the coast to the mountains.
